A creamy delicious homemade hummus!
There are many hummus brands in the store, but to me – there’s nothing better than homemade – where you can taste the freshness of the real + healthy ingredients.
So what is hummus? Hummus is a delicious spread or dip made form chickpeas, tahini, lemon, and spices. It’s commonly eaten in the Middle East and the Mediterranean.
Health Benefits Of Hummus:
About Hummus Ingredients:
It’s super nutritious and full of plant based protein.
It’s rich in ingredients proven to fight inflammation.
Hummus is high in fiber that promotes digestive health.
It has a low glycemic index – so that may help control blood sugar levels.
Full of nutrients that may help with weight management.
Chickpeas (or garbanzo beans) – are the base for hummus. The softened beans breakdown into a smooth paste. You can use canned or home-cooked chickpeas in the recipe. I love to use home cooked and do a variation of recipes with the batch cooked.
Tahini: is a paste made from ground sesame seeds and it makes the hummus taste incredible and contributes to the creaminess. You can buy tahini at the store or make your own.
Fresh Lemon Juice: is a must have! Bottled lemon juice does not taste nearly as good.
Fresh Garlic: will add a little spice and zest. One or two cloves are just right.
Ground Cumin and Salt: help to make the hummus taste amazing!! Really adds to the flavor. The cumin adds a little more spice and richness.
Olive Oil: will add to the texture of the hummus; making it even more creamy. Adding a drizzle to the top of the hummus when served.
Cold Water: is a also a key for fluffy, creamy, whipped, hummus. After all the ingredients are added and blended into a smooth paste, add just a little bit of cold water to smooth the dip even more.
In addition to the ingredients above, you can add more flavors to your hummus by serving it with things like roasted red peppers, olives, pine nuts, and serve with pita chips, tortillas, or on a sandwich.
Optional: Top with a dash of ground paprika before serving
I love to used smoked paprika and red chili flakes for added spice.
NOTE: Through trial and error – I learned something:)
When adding each ingredient to your blender or food processor – I would add the creamy tahini, olive oil, and the lemon juice to the blender first. Then layer the other ingredients. This helps create a smoother creamier hummus.
*1 1/2 cups of Chickpeas
*1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice
*1/4 cup of well – stirred tahini
*1-2 cloves of garlic
*2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
*1/2 teaspoon of ground cumin
