What’s a Dragon Fruit (Pitaya)?
Dragon fruit has to be one of our favorites! It is a type of cactus- that actually comes in 3 colors. Two actually have pink skin, but different colored flesh (one white, the other red), while the other is yellow with white flesh. Dragon fruit is low in calories and offers numerous nutrients, including Vitamin C, phosphorus, calcium, fiber, healthy fats and full of antioxidants.
The taste? It’s a cross between kiwi & pear. It is very refreshing. Great additional ingredient to a fruit salad, smoothie & even enjoyed alone.
Where do you find them? They can be found at your Local Farmer’s Market or Whole Foods- when in season. You may even find it in the “exotic food section” of you local grocery store.
How to pick a Dragon fruit? Look for bright, even-colored skin. If the fruit has a lot of blotches, it may be over ripe. Another sign of over-ripe fruit is if it has very brittle, & on the brown leaves I should be a little ripe but not too mushy when touched.
HOW DO YOU CUT IT? (insert link for How to Cut A Dragon Fruit video here)
What you will need?
- A knife
- A spoon
- Cutting board
- Dragon fruit
Step 1: Place Dragon fruit on the cutting board or clean surface. Cut the fruit straight down the middle with a sharp knife.
Step 2: Separate the fruit into 2 sections. On the inside, the flesh maybe red or white with little black “edible seeds”- just like a kiwi.
Step 3: Take one half of the Dragon fruit and the spoon. Begin to run the spoon around the edges of the flesh until it begins to lift from the outer skin.
Step 4: Lift the flesh from the skin and place it on the cutting board. Reserve the skin for serving. (THE SKIN IS NOT EDIBLE).
Step 5: Slice the skin into cubes & enjoy to your liking.
